What was China’s response to the possible tariffs of Mexico?

China today showed its opposition to “all forms of unilateralism, protectionism and discriminatory and exclusive measures”, after the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that it was necessary to impose tariffs on some countries with which Mexico does not have commercial treaties, including China.

The spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Guo Jiakun declared today at a press conference that his country “has always advocated for an inclusive and beneficial economic globalization.”

Guo said that the Chinese government “firmly opposes any attempt to impose restrictions on China under various pretexts and low coercion, which undermines Chinese legitimate rights and interests.”

“We believe that the countries involved will defend their independence and adequately address the relevant issues,” added the spokesman.

"Yes, we are considering putting some tariff taxes with the countries with which we do not have a commercial treaty. Among them is also China, but it is not the only country," Sheinbaum said Thursday.

The announcement occurred just one day after the visit of the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, with whom Sheinbaum discussed the commercial policy promoted by US President Donald Trump.

Zhou Mi, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of International Economic and Commercial Cooperation assured today to the Global Times official newspaper that "the United States unilateral tariffs have already undermined multilateral rules."

Zhou said that "coercing other countries to break commercial norms is a selfish measure that harms third parties and contradicts the fundamental principles of international economic cooperation" in reference to possible pressures by Washington so that Mexico imposes fees on Chinese goods.
