Currently, viral infections of the respiratory tract – flu and flu-like diseases are widespread. In many cases, these diseases cannot be accurately diagnosed, so they are treated under the general name of viral infections of the respiratory tract.
Especially in children, as well as in elderly people and in people whose body’s defense ability is weakened for various reasons, these diseases have a more severe course and result in complications.
Akif Gurbanov, doctor of medical sciences, professor, full member of the Asian Academy of Sciences, gave an interview to Medicina.az.
Publika.az presents the interview:
– Currently, viral infections are widespread. What are their effects on the body and what are your recommendations?
– Yes, viral infections are widespread again, and people resort to various methods to strengthen the body’s resistance. In the early stages of the disease, flu symptoms, cough, high fever, muscle and headache, and fatigue are common. But viral infections are not limited to these symptoms, they can cause serious systemic inflammatory and immune reactions. For example, respiratory viruses damage epithelial cells, create an inflammatory process in the respiratory tract, and can sometimes lead to complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. In addition, viral infections can sometimes damage organ functions by triggering a systemic inflammatory response by triggering a cytokine storm. Viruses can weaken the immune system, which increases the risk of bacterial infections. For this reason, it is not enough to eliminate the symptoms of viral infections, it is also important to support the immune system.
– In your opinion, what should people do to avoid such complications?
– In these cases, high-dose vitamin C is very important in the prevention and treatment of viral infections by affecting the immune system. High-dose vitamin C increases defense against viruses and bacteria by normalizing the activity of immune cells and increasing interferon synthesis, and has an antioxidant effect. Thus, high-dose vitamin C stimulates the body’s antiviral defense mechanisms, neutralizes free radicals and helps reduce the damage caused by the virus to cells.
I would like to note that during the outbreak of a serious respiratory viral infection such as Covid-19, high-dose vitamin C has saved many lives by reducing the oxidative stress caused by the cytokine storm, regulating the immune response, and minimizing the complications. Due to its proven effectiveness, high-dose vitamin C (7.5 grams, 50 ml intravenous infusion solution) has been included in the treatment protocol of the Covid-19 disease in the world, as well as in Azerbaijan. According to this protocol, high-dose vitamin C is administered as a daily intravenous infusion for 5 days.
Current respiratory viral infections are not as damaging as Covid-19, and high-dose vitamin C strengthens the body’s antiviral defenses, helping to reduce symptoms more quickly and effectively and speed up the recovery process. We believe that in the treatment of viral infections of the respiratory tract, it is sufficient to prescribe high-dose vitamin C in the form of daily intravenous infusion for 3 days.
– How appropriate is the use of high-dose vitamin C instead of antibiotics in viral infections?
– Viral infections are not treated with antibiotics, because antibiotics only affect bacteria. Taking antibiotics during viral infections can weaken the immune system and cause additional stress. High-dose vitamin C, due to its antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties, supports the body’s defense, slows down the reproduction of viruses, and also weakens inflammatory processes.
– Is high-dose vitamin C only used for respiratory viral infections, or is it useful in other cases as well?
– High-dose vitamin C has a multifaceted effect and is useful not only in respiratory viral infections, but also in other cases. For example, in cases of herpes virus infections that are periodically activated by being kept in the body for life (herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus infection, infectious mononucleosis, shingles, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.), high-dose vitamin C weakens the replication of the virus in the body and accelerates the recovery of damaged cells. Due to its antioxidant property in allergic and inflammatory processes, it neutralizes reactive oxygen radicals, regulates the immune response and weakens allergy symptoms. Even in the complex conservative treatment of cancer, its effectiveness has been proven by scientific research. In general, in any pathologies related to inflammatory processes, neutralization of free radicals with high-dose vitamin C reduces cell damage and ensures faster recovery of the disease without complications.
