The first major incident occurred at the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. In Hamburg, a man threatened police with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail near the place where Dutch fans had gathered, Liter.kz reports.
The police first used pepper spray and then fired several shots, which were accurate. The intruder was seriously injured and sent to the hospital. The reasons for his aggressive behavior remain unknown, despite the high level of security and quick response from law enforcement agencies.
A massive brawl broke out between English and Serbian fans in Gelsenkirchen. According to British media, the Serbs attacked first, “bursting around the corner in black balaclavas,” after which they began throwing chairs and bottles. 200 police arrived at the scene to break up the fight.
One of the English fans in an interview with the Mirror said:
“It started suddenly. It’s not clear who started what. But it seemed to me that a group of fans burst into the bar where the English were drinking, and it all started with throwing tables, chairs and bottles. One man was bleeding from his head – I think he is an Englishman”.
However, other sources report that the fight could have been provoked by the British themselves. Also, according to the OFNEWS telegram channel, Serbs and Albanians took part in the fight.
These incidents highlight the problems with ensuring security at Euro 2024, despite the measures taken. In the past, there have also been clashes with police at major football tournaments, such as in 2021 and 2012. Current events indicate that tension levels among fans remain high, requiring additional measures to maintain order and security at the event.
