Secret Service agents failed to instruct local police to guard the rooftop of a building used by the shooter who attempted to kill former US President Donald Trump, an internal investigation has confirmed, the newspaper reported. The Washington Post (WP), Liter.kz reports.
The actions of Secret Service agents during the July 13 rally in Pennsylvania have been called “frighteningly sloppy.” For example, the Secret Service radio room, where agents were supposed to be monitoring potential threats and receiving reports of any problems, had no way to receive real-time alerts from local police monitoring the crowd and the outer perimeter.
The local police alert about a suspicious person at the rally before Trump’s arrival was not widely broadcast over Secret Service radio. Instead, local countersnipers were tasked with sending just one Secret Service agent a photo of a man acting strangely near the Agr building and carrying a rangefinder. Agents never heard any local police radio chatter that day about trying to track down and locate the man after Trump began speaking.
An internal investigation report found that the Secret Service’s Directorate of Protective Operations was slow to step up security for Trump as he began his campaign, even after the agency received intelligence indicating an Iranian government plot to kill or harm political candidates.
Recall that an attempt on Donald Trump’s life took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, July 13. The former US president received a gunshot wound to the ear during a speech to voters, and another spectator died. The attacker, Matthew Cruz, was eliminated on the spot by special services.
