What is special about Türkiye’s TOLUN-IIR guided bullet?

At the World Military Exhibition “World Defense Show 2024” taking place in Saudi Arabia, Turkish Defense Industry Group ASELSAN introduced an infrared guided bullet called TOLUN-IIR.

Developed by ASELSAN, TOLUN-IIR attracted the attention of the international community thanks to its integration of GPS navigation technology, INS inertial navigation system and advanced IIR infrared imaging system.

According to the manufacturer, this smart bullet is designed to carry out attacks on fixed as well as mobile targets with high accuracy. TOLUN-IIR can operate even in harsh weather conditions.

Notably, this guided bullet also has the ability to control loops through the POD system, helping pilots identify targets accurately thanks to image signals transmitted from the infrared search device. This is a very important feature that helps minimize damage in urban combat situations.

The projectile’s guidance system, enhanced with the CRPA antenna, provides strong anti-electronic jamming capabilities, meeting the requirements of modern warfare environments. TOLUN-IIR is mounted on a smart pneumatic mount (SPQR), allowing it to attack one or more targets at the same time. After being dropped from above, the projectile will use folding wings to extend its operating range.

Regarding technical specifications, TOLUN-IIR has a length of 1.8m, a diameter of 18.5cm and a weight of 120kg. With a maximum firing range of up to 80km at an altitude of about 12,000m, TOLUN-IIR has an error of just under 3 meters. This type of ammunition can be equipped on many different platforms such as F-16 fighter aircraft, TF-X fighters and Akinci drones.
