Qatar – Chinese referee Ma Ning awarded three penalty kicks for the host and defending champion Qatar in their match against Jordan in the Asian Cup final sparked widespread controversy and resentment from the Jordanian fans.
“Al-Annabi” won three penalty kicks, one in the first half and two in the second half, and Qatari star Akram Afif took care of translating them into three goals, leading his country to a 3-1 victory and crowning the continental title for the second time in a row.
Arbitration experts commented on the controversy surrounding Qatar’s award of three penalty kicks, as former Egyptian referee Mohamed Kamal Risha considered the first penalty kick received by Akram Afif legitimate.
The Egyptian referee confirmed that the Chinese referee’s decision to award a penalty kick was “correct.”
He added: “Afif was negligently obstructed by the defender, after the Qatari striker cleverly placed his body in front of his opponent. It can be said that Abdullah Nassib (defender of the Jordanian national team) fell into the trap that Afif set in this game.”
Regarding the second penalty kick, Syrian arbitration expert Jamal Al-Sharif stated: “In the 69th minute, there was an attack by the Qatar national team, as Al-Moez Ali passed the ball, to which Ismail Muhammad moved, but Mahmoud Mardi extended his foot and left leg against his opponent.”
He continued: “After returning to the video assistant referee technology, the Chinese referee discovered that there was an obstruction by the Jordanian player on his opponent, so he awarded a penalty kick in favor of the Qatar national team, and therefore the decision was correct.”
Regarding the third penalty kick, Jamal Al-Sharif explained: “Akram Afif changed the path of the ball from the Jordanian goalkeeper, and his right foot became a fulcrum here, and the goalkeeper collided with his opponent and prevented him from continuing to be able to control the ball, and here he achieved all the conditions for scoring, and the referee’s decision was correct.” Here, a correct penalty kick was awarded to the Qatar national team, because Akram Afif was not offside, and a deserved decision to show the yellow card in the face of the Jordan national team goalkeeper.”
