The operational base of the fire brigade remains active. After occupying the church and football field of Córrego do Feijão, a rural neighborhood near the mine, for 27 days, the firefighters conquered a second base, Bravo, and are still there today. It is located in a Ferteco club, a former mining company employee village, 200 meters from where the mine entrance was located.
The area has been transformed into a construction site. According to Vale, these are repair works, with barriers and embankments to contain the advance of waste, recovery of the Ferro-Carvão stream bed and water treatment (the stream bed has been invaded by mud) and restoration of the vegetation. There was a loss of 140 hectares of native forest.

The hot zone – as the firefighters call the search area – is fenced off and no one enters without authorization. In the first days after the tragedy, when there were not enough police in the area to prevent access, many people ventured into the mud in search of relatives and friends. Today Vale has total control and only authorized people can enter, equipped with safety devices, badges with geolocation and scout monitoring.
How sampling stations work
The research station essentially consists of mining equipment adapted to the operation. The waste removed from the hot zone is taken by truck to the station, placed on conveyor belts that separate the thicker material (greater than 5 cm) from the thinner material and inspected by a firefighter. The size was defined together with experts from the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, the firefighters inform.
