Like lack of sleep, too much sleep has a negative effect on human health.
Publika.az professor neurologist Dr. Darya Uluduz presents his views on this.
D.Uluduz states that usually when we say sleep disorder, we think of difficulty falling asleep or insomnia. It is known that lack of sleep causes many health problems. However, experts say that sleeping too much is just as harmful as sleeping too little. Too much sleep can put a person at risk of illness and even death. Excessive sleep can often be a symptom or cause of a medical condition. The ideal sleep duration for adults is between 7-9 hours. The “sleep time” of sleep is individual, as some people may feel good at seven hours, while others need a little longer. However, more than nine hours of sleep is considered excessive for adults. There can be several reasons why a person oversleeps. If a person sleeps more than nine hours, his sleep quality should be evaluated. If his sleep quality is poor, it may cause him to spend more time in bed. The reasons are:
■ Sleep apnea is one of the life-threatening sleep disorders. This condition is characterized by respiratory arrest dozens of times during the night. This type of sleep disorder can lead to irregular sleep, as well as increased sleepiness and fatigue the next day, leading to oversleeping.
■ Depressed people feel constantly tired and weak. They tend to oversleep because they find they have no energy to do anything but sleep.
■ Some medications can cause excessive sleepiness, which is one of the causes of sleep disorders. If excessive insomnia occurs, if the reason for this is the medication taken, you should definitely contact the doctor.
■ We spend sleepless days due to work or social life. Then, if we have time, we try to “compensate” for those days and sleep a lot. This is one of the factors that negatively affect health.
The negative effects of excessive sleep on the body can be listed as follows: Weakening of memory; Depression; Chronic inflammation in the body; High risk of diabetes; High risk of heart disease; Higher risk of stroke; Headache (People who sleep a lot complain of headaches more often than people who sleep normally); Obesity (Sleeping too much can lead to obesity or being overweight because metabolism slows down when a person is inactive).
People report feeling worse when they sleep more than nine hours. We call this “sleep overload.” In this case, blood pressure, heart rate and pulse speed up, there is a tendency to heart diseases. Care should be taken not to sleep less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours. The risk of premature death is also related to the timing of excessive sleep. 16 different scientific studies have found that people who sleep too much have an increased risk of early death. Because too much sleep is linked to an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, depression and obesity.
