NEW YORK.- The NBA fined French rookie Victor Wembanyama $25,000 for throwing a ball into the stands while celebrating a thrilling overtime victory for his San Antonio Spurs against the New York Knicks.
Wembanyama, 20, had a stellar performance on Friday night with 40 points and 20 rebounds in the Spurs’ 130-126 victory against the Knicks, who were driven by a colossal Jalen Brunson, who scored 61 points.
A Wembanyama steal sealed the victory for the home team in the last second of overtime. As the horn sounded, the center hugged the ball to his chest and sent it to the stands of the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, where he was picked up by a young fan, happy to take it as a souvenir.
Asked after the game if he was ready to shoulder the cost of the fumble, Wembanyama responded: “Someone else will.”
NBA rules prohibit deliberately throwing or kicking the ball into the stands.
Wembanyama, a player with unusual abilities for his 2.24 m height, is living up to the enormous expectations generated by his arrival in the NBA.
