At the conference on Ukraine, the French president assured Ukraine of all assistance to ensure the defeat of Russia. Ukraine, however, is complaining about the lack of promised Western aid.
French President Emmanuel Macron is not ready to rule out any kind of help from Europe to ensure Ukraine’s victory against Russian aggression. He even said to send the army if necessary.
Macron outlined Russia’s tougher stance after talks with European leaders attending a European summit on Ukraine in Paris on Monday. According to him, the defeat of Russia is essential to ensure the security and stability of Europe in such a situation. The president of France commented that Russia’s aggressive attitude is increasing not only because of the Ukraine policy, but in general.
While there is a principled consensus in Europe about helping Ukraine counter Russian aggression, there are differences over the details. For example, Germany is the second largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the United States, but is reluctant to engage in direct war. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently explained his hesitation about sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He expressed fear that if German weapons were used to attack Russian territory, Germany might also get involved in the war.
Macron admitted that there is still no consensus on sending European troops. But he is not ready to rule out any possibility for the sake of ‘strategic ambiguity’. Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico recalled that many dismissed the possibility of giving Ukraine tanks or fighter jets even after the Russian offensive began two years ago. He said it should be humbly acknowledged that the aid was finally sent six to twelve months late.
French President Macron said after the Paris conference that more military assistance is being undertaken immediately in the context of Ukraine’s dwindling ammunition and weapons. Europe wants to help Ukraine by supplying more and faster medium and long-range missiles and bombs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the Paris conference via video link. In a brief message, he called for a united stand against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
