When Apple presented the iPhone 15 in September last year, it announced that the pro versions of its smartphone could run Resident Evil 4 Remake, the remastering of the classic video game from the Capcom franchise. It was a real surprise. The aforementioned title, released in early 2023, was originally launched for consoles such as PS4, PS5, Xbox or Windows; The fact that it can be run on a mobile phone was a real feat, with which the Apple company wanted to demonstrate the power of its devices.
From El Comercio we were able to test the game on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, even shortly before the official launch for iPhone (which took place on December 20), so below we will tell you what the experience of playing it from a mobile device was like.. Is it the same as on a console or a computer? Does it meet expectations? Are the graphics getting worse? Does he play well or slow down? Is the equipment overheating? How long does the smartphone battery last? How does the audio sound?

Surprising quality, for not being a console
Before we start, we must say that we will not be doing a review of Resident Evil 4 Remake, if what you want is to find out in detail what the game is about, I invite you to read the review we did in the Technology section.
In summary, we will say that Resident Evil 4 is an action and survival horror video game developed by Capcom. Released in 2005, the game follows Special Agent Leon S. Kennedy, sent to rescue the daughter of the President of the United States, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult in a European village. The protagonist faces hordes of enemies infected with a new type of parasite, while exploring different environments and solving puzzles. The remake adds some evolutionary changes to the original story, but most of it remains the same.
With that said, let’s talk about the game’s requirements. The title is available on the App Store. The game is currently 50% off at S/114.90 ($29.99 USD) until January 17, 2024. Additionally, those who purchase the offer will receive the “Suitcase: Gold” and “Suitcase: Classic” rewards, as well as “ the special amulet: Green Grass”.

To install it you need to have iOS 17.0 or later and a device with an A17 Pro chip or later, i.e. an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. Size-wise, it weighs 64.20 GB. Note that it’s also available for iPads with iPadOS 17.0 or later and a device with an M1 chip or later, and Macs with macOS 13.0 or later, and Macs with Apple’s M1 chip or later.
The installation takes about 20 minutes to half an hour and you can play with the buttons that appear on the mobile screen, although honestly it is much better to do it with a compatible controller. In my case, I used a PS4 controller. This is an important point to keep in mind.
External command
While it is possible to play Resident with on-screen controls, you will need to connect external controls to have a good experience. Any iPhone compatible controller works fine. In my case, I used a PS4 controller.
If you plan to buy the game, consider the controller in your budget if you don’t have one. Using the touch screen control worsens the experience because, in addition to not being as intuitive, it forces us to cover large portions of the screen with our fingers and, therefore, we lose visibility. With the PS4 controller connected via Bluetooth the game ran quite well, I had no connection problems or lag. You can use any other one compatible with iPhone.
Let’s now consider the probably most interesting aspect: image quality. Is it perhaps the same as a console like PS4 or 5? In reality, although it is not the same quality, it is quite good, especially if we take into account that on a smaller screen – 6.1 inches – it is not so easy to find details and imperfections. In terms of textures, they are quite similar to those of PS4, although some have a lower resolution. In the case of the phone, some objects appear a little more pixelated or, for example, Leon’s hair appears much grainier. But, in summary, the overall visual experience, although not the same, is quite close to that of PS4, something commendable for a mobile phone.
Video screen
The match is going quite well. The graphics, although not the same as those of the console, maintain a high quality. Some imperfections are not visible on the phone’s screen, which is just over 6 inches. As for the audio quality, it is enveloping; However, the situation improves if we use good headphones.
The bad thing, and this is something that has nothing to do with quality, is that it is not the same to see images on a 50-inch screen as on another just over 6. The difficulties arise when reading the descriptions. that appear in the game, such as the notes we find in the notebooks or some details. On several occasions I had to move closer to the screen to be able to properly read what it said. However, honestly, it’s not something that bothers me too much or stops me from enjoying the game. The obvious advantage of using a smartphone is that we can carry it in our pocket anywhere and run the game without too much difficulty. Furthermore, since a network connection is not required, we will be able to play from any remote location.
One point against this iPhone version is that you can’t change the image resolution like you can on PC. On the other hand, I noticed that on the mobile screen the scenes appear a little darker than on the PS4. The Resident series itself is set in bleak and gloomy environments, but that darkness stands out a little more on a small screen, in fact on a few occasions I found it difficult to see the images due to the strong intensity of the external light, so for the most part the more I had to close the room curtain or increase the brightness of the rooms or the equipment themselves.
While I couldn’t verify the resolution at which the game runs, testing by the Digital Foundry YouTube channel verified that the game runs at 720p and 30 FPS, remaining stable for the majority of the time, with the exception of moments of latency which we have already talked.
As for the audio, it sounds pretty good. We also didn’t find super surround sound, but it works adequately. However, if we use headphones, the listening experience is elevated. In my case I used it with headphones and found it comfortable.
Now let’s consider fluidity: how well does the game run? In this section we must congratulate Apple. Its latest processor, the A17 Pro, wins applause. If they wanted to show power, they did. However, it’s not perfect either. In general terms the game runs well, but sometimes slows down for a few seconds. This creates a sort of ghosting effect where scenes, when moving more slowly, appear a little blurry. It’s not even that the game freezes, it just slows down for a moment. But 90% of the time played was fine. We didn’t even find many bugs, the biggest one I had was when I was in the dungeon after defeating an enemy and obtaining a key: Leon would remain paralyzed with no possibility to move or change weapons. It only happened to me once. On another occasion the app closed suddenly, but I think it was due to the mobile operating system itself, as the battery was very low.
external socket
External shot of what the game looks like on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. In general terms it performs well. In some places the game got a little slow, but 90% of the time it was pretty good. The big advantage of playing it on a small device is that you can take it with you wherever you want; The biggest disadvantage is that sometimes you have to get closer to the screen to see the details well.
Speaking of the battery, it is no secret that phones from the Apple company suffer from overheating, and when playing Resident, we cannot avoid this detail. The equipment gets hot, not to the point of boiling, but it feels noticeably hot, to the point of discomfort. I played by placing the iPhone on a small support, so as not to need to touch it, obviously taking into account that, as we recommended before, we use an external controller. Another simple solution would be to place it against the wall, desk, or some other structure, so that temperature isn’t an issue.
Now, how many hours can you play on iPhone? In my experience I played for up to four hours straight starting with a 100% charge and when the battery was empty there was just over 40% left.
Is it worth buying Resident Evil 4 Remake for iPhone? You have to take a few factors into account. For example, if you have a console, the experience will be more complete on it; However, if you go on a trip and can’t take it with you and want to continue playing, doing it from your smartphone will be a great option. The iPhone is not a device designed for gamers, however with this game you will be guaranteed several hours of fun. You know, in terms of image, gameplay and audio you will have no complaints. Best of all, if you’ve never played another episode of Resident, you don’t have to worry, each story is independent.
