The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, said that Ukraine should raise the white flag and show courage to start negotiations with Russia.

Francis was asked about his attitude to the debate between those who believe that Ukraine surrendered at the negotiating table because it could not repel Russian troops, and those who claim that this legitimizes the actions of the aggressor. The interviewer used the term white flag in the question.
“In my opinion, the one who looks at the situation, thinks about the people, has the courage to raise a white flag, and negotiates is the strongest. The word negotiation is a courageous word. When you see that you are defeated, when things are going badly, you must have the courage to negotiate. Negotiations must be conducted with the help of international forces,” the Pope said. .
Francis used the terms “white flag” and “defeated” for the first time when discussing the war in Ukraine, although he had previously spoken of the need for negotiations.
“You may be ashamed, but how many deaths will this war bring in the end? We must negotiate in time and find a country that can act as a mediator. Don’t hesitate to negotiate before things get worse,” Francis added.
Francis named Turkey as one of the mediating countries that put forward his candidacy. When asked if he was ready to mediate, the Pope replied: “I am here.”
