MEXICO CITY, Mexico.- This Tuesday, on a tour of the “Ernesto Guevara” Thermoelectric Power Plant and the “Fraile Santa Cruz” Crude Oil Treatment Plant, in Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque, the Cuban ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel stated to the workers of these companies that the oil sector must be “empowered”, in the midst of an energy crisis that worsens every day.
During the visit, having inquired about the behavior of oil and gas extraction in the area, the specialists told Díaz-Canel that this year they have extraction plans that are being overfulfilled, according to the official media. Granma.
The crude oil processing plant could not fulfill its oil extraction plan last year due to “lack of financing” and the non-completion of two new wells. However, it did exceed its goals regarding gas and in 2024 the forecasts are positive.
“This world of oil is a sector that must be promoted,” stated the president when he learned of the company’s projections.
According to the official newspaper’s note, the group of workers closed last year with profits and are immersed in new production processes that have increased and are exploring new areas for extraction, seeking to obtain “juicy” results.
On the other hand, when going to the “Ernesto Guevara” Thermoelectric Power Plant, the general director explained that only unit two is synchronized, which contributes 52 MW to the National Electroenergy System; Well, block one will be under maintenance for 77 days, like unit three.
Díaz-Canel, as if at that moment he found out about the situation and without finding more words to say, said that they had done everything “with a lot of inventiveness” and acknowledged that they were “working hard.”
While the president tours the country and tries, as a populist leader, to convey an idea of concern and involvement in the situation of each territory, Cuba faces one of its worst energy deficits in recent times.
Without offering solutions, Díaz-Canel asks workers to strengthen these sectors and produce more, thus disengaging from their responsibility in resolving the critical context.
The technical director of the UNE explained in a report by Canal Caribe that the causes of this situation include units out of service due to breakdowns and others undergoing maintenance. On social networks, the UNE detailed that units 6 and 8 of the Mariel Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), unit 2 of the CTE Felton and unit 5 of the CTE Renté are in breakdown. In addition, unit 5 of the CTE Mariel, the Energas Varadero plant, units 1 and 3 of the CTE Santa Cruz and unit 1 of the CTE Felton are under maintenance.
