The traditional authorities, leaders and volunteer professionals of the Wayuu Nation Indigenous Movement are in a peaceful demonstration outside the offices of the National Protection Unit, Valledupar headquarters, alleging that they have been victims of systematic persecution since 2016.
They claim that the current director, José Silva, has carried out more than four attempts on his life; however, the UNP has not effectively guaranteed the safety of the Movement’s leaders, who, due to their condition and conviction, become vulnerable to the criminality that plagues, persecutes and murders indigenous leaders, activists and defenders of Human Rights.
“We demand that the assigned measures be effective and equal conditions for politicians and state officials who do enjoy the effectiveness of the service assigned by the UNP,” they expressed in a statement to the public.
They added that more than four months ago the vehicle that would have been assigned to protect the director of the Wayuu Nation Indigenous Movement has been out of service and its return has not been possible. In this sense, they hope to have a positive response and solution to their requirements.
