Although the South will have heavy rain in the coming days, the story “the South is submerged in water after storm Yagi” spreading online is false information.
In the past few days, a series of rumors have appeared on social networks that “the South will soon have storms and rain, everything will be submerged in water”, causing many people to worry. At noon on September 14, answering VTC News, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, affirmed that this will not happen.
Mr. Quyet said that Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern region will have widespread thunderstorms, scattered moderate rain, some places will have heavy rain; thunderstorms may cause tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind. Heavy rain can cause flooding in low-lying areas, along rivers and canals.
“Warnings of heavy rain in the coming days in the Southern region, however, the information that the South will be submerged in water is false.”Mr. Le Dinh Quyet affirmed.
The Head of the Forecast Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station also informed about the development of heavy rain in the next 24 to 48 hours: The Southern region and Ho Chi Minh City have some places with moderate rain, heavy rain, and some places with very heavy rain. A false content was spread by Ven7389 Moc Son Cam in a clip on TikTok: “The South still has a few weeks to prepare mentally. Natural disasters are coming one after another, everyone should prepare backpacks, life jackets and dry food and observe where they can avoid the most safety. Save yourself, don’t wait for someone to come save you… I wish everyone peace.”. As soon as it was posted, this clip quickly attracted nearly 1 million views and was shared by many people, causing confusion.
Ms. Le Thi Xuan Lan, former Deputy Head of the Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that storm Yagi indirectly affected the southern provinces, causing localized rain with prolonged rainfall.
“In the coming days, Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces will experience heavy rain in the late afternoon, due to the strong southwest monsoon, while storm Yagi will only have an indirect impact.”Ms. Lan said and informed that, although only indirectly affected by the southwestern edge of the storm circulation, the southern sea area has very strong winds, waves 3-4m high. On land, strong gusts of wind and storms are very dangerous.
