MINISTER FIDAN: THE TRAGEDY IS GETTING WORSE EVERY DAY
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan spoke at the Ukraine Peace Summit, hosted by Switzerland, held in the town of Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden. Reminding that a devastating war has been going on in the middle of Europe for more than two years, Fidan stated that the number of dead and injured exceeded 500 thousand and the war turned into a war of attrition. Fidan said, “We see that this tragedy can get worse every day in the 21st century. As the war continues, we also see two risks increasingly emerging. Geographically, this war can go beyond Ukraine.” said.
Emphasizing that the conflict has deepened the fault lines and fueled polarization at the global level, Fidan pointed out that the conflict between Ukraine and Russia may soon turn into something more than a war. Secondly, Minister Fidan said that there is a risk that the conventional war in question will include weapons of mass destruction.
“THIS CONFERENCE MAY BE THE LAST EXIT BEFORE THE BRIDGE”
Underlining that the purpose of the meeting was to prevent these two risks and put an end to the war, Fidan said, “We have a Ukrainian peace plan before us. Russia also recently shared its own terms and conditions. Regardless of the content and the conditions put forward, these are important steps and a ray of hope.” We think it is.” he said. Fidan said, “However, both sides think that the steps taken by the other side are an extension of broader war efforts. This conference may be the last exit before the bridge.” he said.
“IF HE HAD BEEN PRESENT IN THE HALL IN RUSSIA, THE SUMMIT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE RESULTS-ORIENTED”
“If Russia, the other side of the conflict, had been present in the hall, this summit could have been more result-oriented.” Fidan noted that there is an increasing need for a comprehensive and inclusive strategy based on diplomacy and negotiations. Underlining that Turkey has actively participated in diplomatic efforts since the start of the war, Fidan continued: “The Istanbul talks in March 2022 and the Black Sea Grain Initiative are very important signs that diplomacy and negotiations can make progress. Turkey is ready to facilitate the process, as always. “
“WHAT MAKES THE BLACK SEA GRAIN INITIATIVE UNIQUE IS INCLUSION”
Emphasizing that what makes the Black Sea Grain Initiative successful and unique is its inclusive nature, Fidan stated that this initiative provides predictability for both parties and ensures navigational safety for maritime trade. Minister Fidan said that there is a lot to learn from this example and that Turkey’s last attempt to implement a similar mechanism almost gave positive results.
“TURKEY’S SUPPORT TO UKRAINE’S TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY WILL CONTINUE”
Stating that Turkey will continue to strive for peace, Fidan continued: “Turkey continues its support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence with determination. Our peace vision is realistic, comprehensive and practical. For this purpose, we are forward-looking.” “We are determined to create a road map. As President Erdoğan stated, ‘There will be no losers in a just peace.'”
