Both deficiency of iodine-containing thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) and their excess (hyperthyroidism) have a negative impact on human health and lead to various pathological conditions.
Publika.az reports that Maria Barskaya, a doctor of the endocrinology department of the Russian Children’s Clinical Hospital, listed the symptoms of thyroid gland diseases in children.
According to Barskaya, hypothyroidism is divided into primary and secondary: primary hypothyroidism can be either acquired or congenital and develops due to pathology of the thyroid gland, secondary hypothyroidism occurs due to insufficient production of thyroid-stimulating hormone by the pituitary gland.
The doctor noted that 90 percent of childhood hyperthyroidism occurs with diffuse toxic goiter and can also be associated with autoimmune diseases, viral or bacterial infections. In children, hypothyroidism causes retardation of mental and physical development, disruption of metabolism and thermoregulatory processes.
In newborns, hypothyroidism is manifested by retardation of psychomotor development, decreased muscle tone, edema, tissue paste, poor weight gain, and growth retardation. In other children, this condition leads to moderate nutrition, delayed growth and sexual development, muscle weakness, brittle nails, dryness and hair loss, lethargy, sleepiness, apathy, obesity, and obesity on the background of constipation.
According to the expert, the main symptoms of hyperthyroidism in children are weight loss. severe sweating, tachycardia and heart palpitations, mood swings, irritability, tearfulness, inner restlessness, tremors of the hands and sometimes the whole body, general and muscle weakness and fatigue.
