Warning: – A red flag

In recent years, second-hand purchases have become more and more and it is not inconceivable that this year there were several used gifts under the Christmas tree.

Gjensidige is in contact with Tina Jerstad, communications consultant at Tenerity, who warns against fraud on the second-hand market. Among other things, the company works to help people exposed to fraud.

– Fraud on the second-hand market is nothing new, but it now happens in different ways than before. And criminals are becoming more and more skilled. In busy daily life it is easy to become careless. Simply access your mobile phone quickly to complete a purchase or sale while you stir the pot and the kids discuss. It can quickly become expensive, she says.

Warns against fraud

Jerstad informs that not only those who buy, but also those who sell on the second-hand market, are at risk of being scammed.

– Scammers know the systems well and have often collected a lot of information about you. They can also use details they find on social media. This way you will be more easily manipulated into doing what they want.

The communications consultant points out that it is common for the seller to be tricked into paying for shipping.

– There are several creative stories out there. Some say they would like to buy a car for their daughter who lives in Denmark, others say they cannot use the payment solutions in the app because they live abroad. Long, complicated stories are a wake-up call.

Warns: – Coming to your house

In recent years, several fraud attempts have occurred across all channels. Earlier this year, DinSide wrote that this has led major banks and police to join forces in a large-scale campaign against fraud.

Tenerity previously said that since 2020 they have seen a tenfold increase in the number of people who have had their accounts emptied as a result of BankID fraud.

Suggestions:

  • If an offer seems too good to be true, it often is.
  • Do not accept dialogue or payments outside of the established platform.
  • Don’t believe unbelievable stories. Does it get complicated? Forget him.
  • Don’t be afraid to be rude. Find another buyer or seller.
  • If you become suspicious of someone you trade with, check how long they have been users of the platform and what ratings they have received.
  • Be careful when logging in to various websites with your username and password.
  • Be very skeptical about logging in with BankID.
  • Never give credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or other sensitive information to strangers.
  • Stop and think about it. Don’t let your opponent stress you out by trying to get to the finish line quickly.
  • If you notice someone behaving inappropriately, report it in the app or contact customer service.
  • Have you logged in with BankID? Call the bank immediately and ask for help. Check your insurance.
  • Have you been scammed? Report the relationship.
