Waldviertel opts for wind power – 2024-03-10 16:25:56

Almost two thirds of the communities enable climate protection in the Waidhofen district in the Waldviertel

St. Pölten (OTS) By approving two out of three wind farms, almost two thirds of the communities surveyed took an offensive stance on climate protection and wind power. WEB and EVN can now start planning 13 wind turbines. “The result once again clearly shows how positively wind power is viewed by the population,” notes Stefan Moidl, managing director of IG Windkraft: “This is a clear signal to politicians to work harder for a rapid expansion of wind power and a clear Signs against nuclear power from abroad.”

The day before the anniversary of the reactor disaster in Fukushima was the big day of the referendums on wind power in the Waldviertel. Never before have so many referendums on wind power been conducted in one day. In total, 10,271 citizens were able to cast their vote on wind power. The result is also impressive. In three out of five municipalities, a majority was in favor of building wind farms. This means that WEB and EVN, as project operators, can begin preparations for the approval of 13 of the 18 wind turbines that were up for vote. “I am particularly pleased with the result, as it once again clearly shows that the majority of the population has a positive attitude towards wind power, even when it comes to projects in their own community,” said Moidl.

Almost two thirds positive votes in 2024

With five votes in one day, the statistics from the popular surveys paint a positive picture. This means that two thirds of all referendum surveys so far this year have been positive. This also reflects the long-term average of the survey results. Around two thirds of the surveys were positive and many other projects were also implemented with the approval of the local council. Since 2000, only 6% of the project ideas brought to the community have failed due to a negative vote from the population. “The majority of the population is a big supporter of the expansion of wind power,” says Moidl happily: “The reason why we are not making any real progress with the expansion of wind power is not the population, but is to be found in politics.” There is still a lack of additional ones Areas for wind power expansion, the permits are excessive and there is a lack of staff in the permitting authorities. “Politicians should take the example of the population here, significantly accelerate the expansion of wind power and quickly adapt the long overdue framework conditions,” said Moidl.

Wind power instead of nuclear energy

With the next three wind farms, Lower Austria will be able to reverse the development of recent years. Since 2021, Lower Austria has no longer generated enough electricity to cover its consumption. “Exporting electricity is the best way to counteract the nuclear power fantasies of our northern neighbor, as this will only make them less economical,” notes Moidl.
