VMRO-DPMNE was attacked in Skopje for the 180-degree turn after the elections – 2024-06-25 22:33:53

The opposition in Skopje attacked the VMRO-DPMNE nationalists for the 180-degree turn the party made after winning the country’s parliamentary elections. In the program of the future government, there is not a word about canceling the Prespa Agreement with Greece, nor about terminating the Treaty of Good Neighborhood with Bulgaria, as promised.

The parliament in North Macedonia is debating the program and composition of the country’s future government proposed by Hristijan Mickoski.

“The first main priority, the country’s membership in the EU, in the program (of the government) has a completely different concept from the one that VMRO-DPMNE presented as the opposition in the last 8 years,” said Oliver Spasovski from the opposition socialist party SDSM, which ruled until then the elections.

“The fact is that (in the program) there is no word about canceling the Prespa Treaty or terminating the Treaty with Bulgaria. The fact is that there is no plan on how you will change the negotiating framework, which years ago you said you would not accept,” he said .

Spasovski also attacked future Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski for changing his position regarding the use of the constitutional name of the state. For years VMRO-DPMNE promised that it would stop using the country’s constitutional name “Republic of North Macedonia” and would only use “Macedonia”.

However, after the vote, Mickoski indicated that he would comply with the request of the international partners and use the full name.

“Is this the new concept? If so, it should be told to the citizens. Because in front of the citizens, you claim that even if they take away your mandate, you will not use the addition (Northern) in the name (of the state), and today here in front of the Macedonian parliament, as the mandate holder, speaks of respect for the Prespa Treaty and the constitutional name of the state,” said Spasovski, quoted by BTA.

According to him, there are no new projects recorded in the field of infrastructure, but the completion of already started ones, including the project to build sections of Corridor 8 with Bulgaria, which was fiercely attacked by the opposition from VMRO-DPMNE.

“Regarding the French proposal (the negotiating framework of the Republic of North Macedonia – b.a.) you said that you would ask for its change, and yesterday your deputy president said that you would not ask for a change in the negotiating framework. Tell this to the Macedonian public. Your the goal was only to come to power”, SDSM deputy Mile Taleski addressed the VMRO-DPMNE MPs.

According to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the meeting to discuss the program and the composition of the government of North Macedonia can last for a maximum of two days. Voting must close at midnight on Monday. The government will be elected if the majority of the total number of deputies vote for it.

The parliamentary majority expected to support the new government in the legislature consists of 78 MPs.

The new government proposed by Mickoski will have 24 members and five deputy prime ministers.
