News leaked yesterday that FC Schalke 04 has landed Marc Wilmots during the rebuilding process. Wilmots becomes sporting director of his former club.
Vital Borkelmans, who has formed a tandem on the sidelines with Wilmots for years, spoke to Wilmots Monday night. “I told him I’m proud. He deserves it,” Borkelmans says.

Belgians like they used to be
In 2014 Marc Wilmots managed to move to Schalke 04, recalls Vital Borkelmans. “But he didn’t do it because of the national team and he wasn’t able to work well with the then coach. 10 years later he still has the chance.”
Wilmots then becomes the sporting head of coach Karel Geraerts. “He told me that at Schalke it will be like before with some Belgians. At that time there were Michael Goossens, Nico Van Kerckhoven and some other Dutchmen. They are going like this again.”
