SINGAPORE – A family Singapore has paid cancer treatment costs of SD70,000 (more than Rp. 842 million) for a domestic helper (PRT) from Indonesia. The employer’s generosity has gone viral on social media with praise pouring in.

Chen Daimei, the woman of the family, not only paid the brain cancer treatment bill of SD70,000, but also employed another maid to take care of the Indonesian domestic worker named Purwati or known as Wati.

In an interview with a Mandarin-language Singapore newspaper, Shin Min Daily News On July 14, Chen (60) mentioned how he had known Wati for more than 15 years.

Chen said that on February 10, the first day of the Chinese New Year, Wati had a severe headache when she was about to make coffee.

The pain was felt to be very extraordinary and rare for Wati, who was 50 years old. Wati could not stand up straight because of the pain.

Chen, who described Wati as “physically healthy,” was shocked and rushed Wati to Singapore General Hospital (SGH). Unfortunately, they received disappointing news as doctors informed her that Wati had a 2.9cm tumor in her brain.

Wati then underwent two surgeries. A craniotomy the day after her diagnosis to remove the tumor, and another along with electrotherapy and chemotherapy treatments for the cancer.

Nearly half of her SD130,000 bill was claimable under her insurance. That’s when Chen and her husband decided to sponsor the remaining SD70,000 medical expenses.
