Viral Phenomenon of Hole Clouds in Jember Sky, Netizens: Sign of Disaster?

JEMBER – A video has gone viral on social media showing the phenomenon of strangely shaped clouds in the sky of Jember, East Java.

This immediately attracted the attention of netizens and was associated with a sign that a natural disaster would occur in Indonesia.

The video showing the cloud phenomenon was uploaded by the TikTok account @efiyfakiyza. The cloud phenomenon was seen occurring in front of a school which was also witnessed by dozens of students who were enjoying their break time.

“Natural phenomenon guys, Allahuakbar, Subhanallah, what is this? It’s like a swimming pool, you know. But it’s like ribs too,” said the woman who recorded the video.

In the video, clouds can be seen filling the sky during the day. But there is a part that seems to be pulled down which creates a mound. In fact, the hole created was quite large, so it was quite scary.

Fallstreak Cloud Phenomenon

After tracing it, it was a cloud phenomenon called ‘Fallstreak’. Fallstreak holes are also known as “punch hole clouds” which are large circular or elliptical shaped gaps that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds.

According to the National Weather Service, the process of Fallstreak occurring due to high to medium level clouds, such as altocumulus, often consists of small water droplets that are much colder than freezing, but have not yet frozen.

These supercooled water droplets need a reason to freeze, which is usually in the form of ice crystals. Planes passing through cloud layers can produce these ice crystals.

Once ice crystals enter a cloud, the water droplets quickly freeze, expand, and begin to fall. This causes a hole, which will begin to widen as the surrounding droplets begin to freeze.
