Valencia: A mysterious black spot has appeared in the sea, the beaches are closing

In the east of Spain, south of Valencia, several beaches were closed today due to a black, apparently fuel-like stain in the sea, the origin of which is not yet known. Local media reports about it. According to the newspaper El País, it is also an area next to a natural park.

The dark oil stain was also observed by lifeguard Leticia Rodríguez at l’Arbre del Gos beach this morning around 10:30, about four kilometers south of Valencia. When the lifeguards in the area finished their shift at eight in the evening, they did not see any pollution of the sea by fuel, El País wrote.

Radio Cadena SER reported this afternoon that three beaches were closed and that technicians took samples to determine what kind of fuel it was and how dangerous it was. It is not yet clear from where it reached the beaches.

Mayor of Valencia María José Catalá said that the city hall made the fire and police departments available to help clean up the affected beaches. Swimming is prohibited on them and they are monitored by drones. According to a spokesman for the regional government, the stain is about two kilometers along the coast and is not expected to spread further.
