Clinical trials of an mRNA vaccine for COVID-19 will begin in mid-April, health authorities in Shanghai reported, via Science and Technology Daily.

Virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines, which produced specific antibodies in immunological experiments on mice, will be tested, said Yi Chengdong, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, at a press conference held this week.

VLP vaccines are multiprotein structures that mimic the organization and conformation of viruses but lack the viral genome, potentially producing effective, safer, and more affordable vaccine candidates.

On the other hand, three new coronavirus testing products have been approved and applied clinically in Shanghai, said Zhang Quan, director of the Shanghai science and technology commission.

According to Zhang Quan, more than 80,000 test reagents were exported from Shanghai this week to 22 countries, notably Germany, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Saudi Arabia,”
