In Greek mythology, Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, of the “cursed” dynasty of Atreides, did not hesitate to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to appease Artemis and gain the favor of the gods in his war campaign in rich Troy. He would do anything to conquer her, he would stop at nothing to achieve his goal…
In today’s America, under the toxic influence of an unprecedented political confrontation that drags from court to court, Joe Biden did not hesitate to “sacrifice” his son Hunter, “allowing” a judicial conviction against him, to overthrow the Trump’s dominant narrative that as President he uses the judicial system even against his Republican opponent. In a country where all types of firearms, from pocket pistols to military-style automatics and machine guns, are freely sold and gun ownership is considered a “constitutional right” the conviction of the President’s son for illegal gun possession sounds ironic. Essentially, the offense is established on the basis of the fact that Biden’s son falsely stated in the relevant certificate accompanying the gun purchase that he was not a drug user, when he was. However, this does not change the essence of the case, and the Democratic camp is stigmatized in turn with a condemnation of a person from the President’s inner circle. Except that Biden will “play” it differently. With the stoicism with which he has decided to face Hunter’s legal adventure, and even for an offense that under normal circumstances would be just a misdemeanor, he will make the American public understand the difference between his own morals and that of his arrogant opponent of, who, speaking of his recent conviction in New York in the Stormy Daniels case, speaks of “corrupt” judges and promises “revenge”.
But is such a scenario possible? Is it possible that the political climate has reached this point in the country that likes to deliver lessons in Democracy to the whole world? Certainly there is an element of journalistic exaggeration, or perhaps oversimplification in the approach and political interpretation of yesterday’s sentencing of Hunter Biden in Delaware, a state “painted” democratic, but exaggeration is sometimes not a necessary “tool” to make the “visible” truth;
The President made no attempt to intervene directly or indirectly in the case, either with his executive power or through communications, which would have been politically damaging for him. He “allowed” the Justice Department to move forward with the case, which could indeed send his drug-addled son to prison and his own re-election campaign down a dangerous path. “I will accept the outcome of this case and continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal,” he said. In his first reaction to the verdict, Hunter Biden quietly accepted it with a condescending nod of his head, saying simply that he was grateful for the love and support of his family and that he was blessed to be “clean” again.
At the expense of H. Biden, under the Ministry of Justice, lawyer David Weiss, Trump’s “representative”, appealed. Weiss has indicted Biden on three felony and six misdemeanor counts, including illegal gun possession and tax evasion in the state of California, alleging that the President’s son failed to pay $1.4 million in back taxes over the period between 2016 and 2019, while spending millions on drugs, paid sex and expensive cars.
“An unprecedented two-week legal drama that led to the historic convictions of a former President and the son of a sitting president has produced a clear political outcome. The survival of the Rule of Law in America and the unimpeachable Judiciary may ultimately depend on the choice voters make in November. The country’s potentially divergent paths under President Joe Biden or Republican challenger Donald Trump are made distinct by the way both men, their families and their political activism have been affected by the twin trials and verdicts, CNN aptly comments.
