US vetoes Palestine’s accession to the UN; initiative is rejected

During the UN Security Council meeting today it voted on Palestine’s initiative to become a full member state of the United Nations, The United States government voted against.

United States, as a member foundedhas the right to veto these initiatives despite being approved by the rest of the countries.

The draft resolution presented by Algeria, which recommended to the General Assembly “that the State of Palestine be admitted as a member of the United Nations”, obtained:

  • 12 votes in favor.
  • 3 abstentions
  • 1 veto (United States)

We recommend: Palestine with a dead girl in her arms: This is the winning image of the World Press Photo.

The admission of a State to the UN must first receive a positive recommendation from the Council (at least 9 votes out of 15 in favor, without a veto by a permanent member), and then be approved by the General Assembly, by a two-thirds majority.

In September 2011, the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, began the procedure, which was never completed in the face of American opposition.

In November of the following year, the Palestinians finally obtained the minor status of “non-member observer state.”

We recommend: Hamas would give up its armed wing if a Palestinian State is achieved: Turkish minister.

The Palestinian delegation relaunched its application to become a full member in early April, amid the Israeli attacks on Gaza.
