US to begin talks with Ukraine on G7 security guarantees

The United States and Ukraine will begin negotiations this week on the security guarantees that the Group of Seven promised Kiev in July during the Atlantic Alliance summit in Lithuania, the US State Department spokesperson confirmed this Monday. , Matthew Miller.

“Those talks are going to begin this week,” the spokesperson said, noting that they are “the result of the statement that the G7 made public on the sidelines of the last NATO summit in Vilnius.”

For his part, the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, Andrei Yermak, referred on Sunday to the upcoming negotiations and indicated that kyiv hoped that the guarantees would ensure its “ability to win” the conflict with Russia.

Miller, however, stated that the guarantees offered in Vilnius referred to “long-term commitments to the security of Ukraine.” This is a process “separate from the security assistance we regularly provide now” and aims to help Ukraine “establish a long-term military that can serve as a deterrent.”

According to the American spokesman, the upcoming talks between Washington and kyiv should address the details of security commitments. He also mentioned that the talks would be held “virtually, at the deputy undersecretary level.”

On July 12, the G7 countries, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania, approved a joint declaration on aid to Ukraine in which they commit to offering “durable” military support to kyiv.

In this regard, the Ukrainian Defense Minister commented that before drawing conclusions from what the Group of Seven offers he wants to see “details and prices” of their commitment. With RT
