Thirteen Democratic members of the US House of Representatives called on President Joe Biden to take immediate action to stop the Israeli aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip, and to bring urgent humanitarian aid into the Strip.
The American website, The Intercept, reported that the 13 representatives, led by Cori Bush of Missouri, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Andre Carson of Indiana, submitted a draft resolution to Biden, demanding that he take action and call for an immediate end to the escalation, a ceasefire, and the sending of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The website quoted Tlaib as saying in a press conference yesterday: “The people of Gaza no longer have enough bags to cover the bodies of their dead,” adding: “We all realize that imposing collective punishment on the Palestinians is a war crime.”
Tlaib pointed out that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and the vast majority of Congress did not even mention the possibility of a ceasefire.
Rep. Cori Bush joined Tlaib in saying that Palestinians in Gaza are being subjected to “collective punishment, which is a war crime.”
The Intercept website explained that this draft resolution comes after two attempts in the House of Representatives, whose sponsors did not dare to demand that “Israel” cease fire, indicating that the first draft resolution was submitted by representatives from the Democratic and Republican parties, led by “Michael McCaul” and “Gregory Meeks”, and received the support of more than 420 members of Congress, but it did not mention Palestinian civilians and the number of martyrs who are rising due to the Israeli aggression.
The second draft resolution was a letter submitted by Republicans led by Pramila Jayapal, Dee Wash and others, calling on Biden to take action to ensure that water and food reach Gaza, and to demand that Israel abide by international law. However, the draft also did not address a ceasefire, while sources confirmed that the drafters of the draft resolution did not raise this request for fear that the number of signatories, which is 55 representatives, would be reduced.
“What we are hearing from Democrats today is worse than the usual anti-Palestinian rhetoric we usually hear from the US administration,” a Democratic House staffer said, according to the website. “Israeli officials have openly admitted their intent to commit genocide, and Democrats are deliberately keeping quiet about it and are willing to be complicit in what is happening and will happen in the coming days.”
