US Prepares New Sanctions for Iran over Attack on Israel

WASHINGTON – United States (US) Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is preparing new sanctions against Iran in response to Tehran’s counterattack against Israel.

Reuters revealed an Axios report that quoted Yellen’s statement.

“The Treasury Department will not hesitate to work with our allies in using our sanctions authorities to continue disrupting the Iranian regime’s malign and destabilizing activities,” Yellen said, per the Axios report.

“The attacks by Iran and its proxies underscore the importance of the Treasury Department’s work in using our economic tools to counter Iran’s malign activities,” he further said, Axios reported.

Yellen previously said Iran’s actions threatened stability in the Middle East and could have a negative impact on the economy.

On Saturday evening, the Islamic Republic launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel in retaliation for Tel Aviv’s airstrike on its consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, which killed several senior officials.

Most of the drones and missiles were intercepted by the United States, Britain, France and Jordan before reaching Israel.
