The reason is that the Democratic Party is considered to have silenced pro-Palestinian speakers at a convention in Chicago.
A campaign group called Muslim Women for Harris said it had withdrawn its support for Harris—who is currently the US vice president—and her running mate Tim Walz.
Pro-Palestinian activists and their allies have demanded that Harris commit to cutting US military aid to Israel and a stronger push for a ceasefire in Gaza.
They had planned to voice their position at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which ends on Thursday.
“We cannot in good conscience move forward with Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, given new information from the Uncommitted National Movement, that VP Harris’ team denied their request to have a Palestinian-American speaker on the DNC stage,” the group wrote in a statement on Instagram.
“We pray that the DNC and VP Harris’ team make the right decision before this convention ends. For the good of all of us,” the group continued, as quoted by The GuardianFriday (23/8/2024).
Earlier on Thursday, Abbas Alawieh, one of the leaders of the Uncommitted National Movement, said that Democrats had refused to allow Palestinian-Americans to speak at the DNC.
“We think it’s unacceptable. We think this is a party that should not silence the voice of the people,” he said in a video posted on X.
