The United States is trying to interfere in the Russian presidential election and is planning a cyber attack on the electronic remote voting system, according to the Russian intelligence agency SVR. Russians will elect the head of state from March 15 to 17, and current president Vladimir Putin is expected to become the head of state again. The US has not commented on the statement of Russian intelligence.
According to SVR, “it should be with the participation of leading American IT specialists, a cyber attack was carried out on the electronic remote voting system, which made it impossible to register the votes of a significant part of the voters”. The SVR also accused Washington of ordering Russian opposition sources on the Internet to spread appeals addressed to Russian citizens to ignore the election. The West is said to get an excuse in this way to question the results of the elections due to the low voter turnout.
SVR has not provided any evidence for its claims, and the United States has not yet responded to them.
The Reuters agency recalls that Putin warned the West that any attempts by foreign powers to interfere in the elections would be considered an act of aggression by Moscow. The Kremlin recently said Russia would not interfere in November’s U.S. presidential election, rejecting American findings that Moscow created campaigns to influence the 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections.
