Tim Walz, the Governor of the US State of Minnesota, officially accepted Kamala Harris’ vice presidential nomination on the third day of the Democratic Party Convention. World-famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey made a surprise visit to the convention and announced her support for Harris and Walz.
Walz’s acceptance speech was also his first “statement to the nation.” The 60-year-old politician said he has never given a “big speech” but frequently gave “pep talks” when he was a high school football coach.
Walz, “[Seçime] “We have 76 days, there is nothing left. We sleep when we die. We will go out on the field with everything we have. We will move forward like this and close the book on Donald Trump,” he said.
Walz likened the US presidential elections scheduled for November 5 to an American football game. Emphasizing that the Democratic Party was slightly behind, the politician said, “but it’s our turn to attack and the ball is in our hands.”
The audience applauded the Democratic vice presidential candidate with chants of “ram” during his speech.
As Walz spoke about his family, his 17-year-old son Gus could be seen standing up and crying, “That’s my daddy.”
Oprah supports Harris
American television star Oprah Winfrey appeared on the third night of the Democratic Party Convention held in her hometown of Chicago and announced her support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Describing the November election as a “fight for freedom,” Oprah urged voters to choose “common sense over nonsense.”
“Let’s choose truth, honor, joy… because these are the best things about America,” the famous presenter said.
Oprah said Harris would win in November and make history in the US, adding:
“We will soon be telling our daughters and sons how the child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, both idealistic and energetic immigrants, grew up to become the 47th president of the United States.”
Oprah previously supported the candidacy of Barack Obama, the first black president of the United States, in 2008, but did not speak at the party convention.
Democrats hold sit-in protest in support of Palestinians
Four delegates who criticized the Democratic Party’s stance on the Israel-Gaza war and supported the Palestinians staged a sit-in outside the event area, saying they were not given a place to speak at the congress.
“We just want to make our voices heard,” Abbas Alawieh, a Democratic Party delegate from Michigan, told reporters.
Alawieh stressed that it was “unacceptable” that they were not given the right to take the floor.
Meanwhile, the family of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 attacks, spoke at the Democratic Party Convention.
Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to release their 23-year-old son and 108 other captives held by Hamas.
According to Israel, Hamas militants killed 1,200 people and captured 251 in the October 7 attacks.
According to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, more than 40,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s military operations launched in October.
Supporting Palestinian groups have been gathering in various parts of Chicago since the first day of the Democratic Party convention to call on the US administration to cut military support to Israel.
The convention will conclude today with a closing speech by Kamala Harris, who is expected to formally accept her candidacy for president.
Trump speaks from behind bulletproof glass
As Democrats gathered in Chicago, former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump held his first outdoor rally since his assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13.
Trump, who met with his supporters in the state of North Carolina, drew attention by appearing on stage behind a bulletproof glass panel.
Trump was injured in the ear during the Pennsylvania assassination attempt, and immediately afterwards, he appeared on the podium at the Republican Party Convention, where he was a presidential candidate, with his ear bandaged.
The attacker and a bystander lost their lives in the incident, and two bystanders were injured.
