The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that includes a possible ban on TikTok.
The bill includes national security priorities, including sanctions on Iran, the seizure of frozen Russian sovereign assets and a measure that could lead to a national ban on the TikTok platform.
Specifically, the bill requires TikTok’s current Chinese owner to sell or face a possible ban. It would also allow President Joe Biden to impose new sanctions against Russia and Iran.
In this regard, TikTok said it is “unfortunate” that the House is “using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again hinder a bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million of companies and would close the platform”
The US House of Representatives is also voting on three separate bills to provide foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region.
The three foreign aid bills are expected to pass and then move to the Senate for approval in the coming days. Together, they include the $95 billion relief package championed by President Biden, with some changes from the version passed by the Senate two months ago.
