US Accuses Russia of Using Chloropicrin Chemical Weapon, This Contains Dangerous Substances

MOSCOW – Connection United States of America (US)-Russia became tense again when Washington accused Moscow of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian military forces, thereby violating the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

The US State Department on Wednesday claimed that the fighting methods in Kiev used riot control agents (tear gas) in addition to the chemical, chloropicrin.

“It was not an isolated incident and was probably motivated by the Russian military’s goal of driving the enemy from their strongholds and achieving tactical victory on the battlefield,” the department explained as reported by The New York Times.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, chloropicrin, used as a weapon of war and pesticide, is highly toxic and poses a health risk to individuals if inhaled.

The report was published about a week after US President Joe Biden signed into law a new funding bill for Ukraine to fend off Russia’s increasing attacks on the country.

The revelations came on the same day that the US Treasury Department announced a series of tough new sanctions targeting nearly 300 entities in Moscow, China and other countries suspected of supporting the military campaign in Kiev launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier last week, the Kremlin harshly criticized Washington’s hypocrisy in rejecting an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into brutal crimes committed by its powerful ally, Israel, in the Gaza Strip.

Chloropicrin, also known as trichloronitromethane, is an organic chemical with the formula Cl3CNO2. It is a greenish-yellow liquid with a sharp pungent odor. Chloropicrin is a chemical warfare agent prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
