Geneva – The United Nations Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Adam Abdel Mawla, announced that at least 12.9 million people suffer from food insecurity in Syria.
During a meeting held online on Friday, Abdel Mawla pointed out that the war in Syria has been going on for more than 13 years, noting that the needs of the population have increased significantly year after year since that time.
He explained that “16.7 million people in Syria need humanitarian aid, while the number was 15.3 million in 2023, and 14.6 million in 2022.”
He pointed out that more than 7 million Syrians were displaced within the country, and that almost the same number took refuge in other countries, most of them in the neighboring countries of Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon.
He stressed that what is happening in Syria is still “one of the bloodiest crises in the world” for civilians, noting that conflicts are still dangerous in various regions of Syria, and that there has been a sharp increase in the pace of conflicts recently, especially in the north of the country.
Abdel Mawla said that the United Nations launched an appeal for aid worth $4.07 billion to support 10.8 million people in need of assistance in Syria for the year 2024, but as of March 1 of the same year, only 0.02 percent of it had been filled.
He stated that the shortage in resources will bring difficulties in meeting needs, stressing that “the Syrian people deserve the best.”
