There is a dearth of legspinners in the country. Speaking at the BCB press conference on Saturday, Sujan explained why there are less legspinners in Bangladesh, why legspinners are not emerging.
Sujan made it clear that no team at the club level wants to take risks and play leggy. Legspinners get more runs. No party can accept that. They need to change that attitude. ‘A legspinner, a match winner – remember that,’ Sujan told everyone.
Sujan explains, ‘No one wants to play legspinner in Dhaka’s first-second division. Legspinners take a six off a bad ball, no one wants to accept that. If you follow the Second Third Division, there the spinners give 18 runs in ten overs. Left-arm spinners dominate there. They don’t want to play leggy there. Our club officials must understand, a legspinner is a match winner.’
Highlighting the rise of Rishad Hossain, Sujan said, ‘If you see Rishad. No one wanted to play him three years ago. Last year he was with me in Abahani. As strong as Abahani is, it is difficult to play there. I sent him to shine pool and said – you play in shine pool. I said one thing to that club, he should play regularly. I agreed to leave him on this condition. But he got 23 wickets in 10 matches. He contributed to winning many matches.
“We often forget that the leg-spinner is the match-winner. I will tell the club officials, you give legspinners a chance. They might do badly in one match, but that legspinner will be your match winner. It is the responsibility of our BCB to develop them, BCB does not play club cricket, clubs do. They must be interested in the legspinner. The opportunity must be given to them. Legspinners will bring results for them if given a chance.’
Sujan’s last words, ‘Masha Allah, we have many legspinners coming up now, we are happy. There was a shortage of nursing, so we took one of the legspinner coaches in development. I am very happy that Mushtaq Bhai (national team spin coach Mushtaq Ahmed) has joined us. I think if he stays with us for longer, we will have some legspinners coming up.’
