Unable to stand up due to severe back pain: he spent 3 hours in the emergency room on a mattress on the floor before finally being sent home

The patient was examined by a doctor “on the ground”, without undergoing an x-ray examination and was prescribed painkillers.

Several hours lying on the floor on a mattress. This is the difficult situation that a man claims to have experienced in the emergency room of the university hospital of Nîmes this Thursday 4 January, reports France 3 Occitanie.

The 50-year-old was taken to the emergency room by firefighters due to back pain. After waiting a long time in a room, he sees his stretcher commandeered for other patients. “He had to get off even though he felt a strong pain and tingling in his legs,” says his partner into the microphone of France Bleu Gard Lozère.

He was advised to have an MRI prescribed “in private”.

Then he laboriously settles himself on a mattress spread on the floor. After three hours he was examined by a doctor “on the ground”, without undergoing an x-ray examination and was prescribed painkillers. The emergency doctor advises him to contact his family doctor to have an MRI prescribed “in private”. “They (CHU emergency rooms) are overloaded,” believes the patient’s companion.

The couple, who praised the “kindness” of the health workers, were finally sent home to Lézan, almost 40 kilometers from the Gard prefecture. Quoted by our colleagues, the hospital management said that its teams are doing what they can with “the means available”.
