UN vote Tuesday on Gaza cease-fire, hints at US veto – 2024-02-18 16:00:05

The UN Security Council may vote on a humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war next Tuesday. The member state of Algeria has proposed a ceasefire. However, the United States has indicated that it will veto the initiative. British news agency Reuters reported this on Saturday (February 17).

According to the report, Algeria presented this draft proposal about two weeks ago. However, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said in a statement on Saturday about this draft proposal that such a proposal could hinder the ongoing “sensitive negotiation” process on the ceasefire.

On whether or not to adopt a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, Thomas Greenfield said the US does not support the draft resolution. If a vote is held on it, it will not be accepted. The US will veto it. However, the country has repeatedly called for a ‘humanitarian ceasefire’.

According to reports, the US has twice vetoed proposals for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This is how the western country has been protecting its ally Israel.

A ‘yes’ vote of at least 9 members is required to pass a resolution in the 15-member UN Security Council. If permanent members US, UK, France, China or Russia vote ‘no’ then the resolution will not pass. No vote by permanent members is called veto.
