Israel’s UN ambassador, Gilad Erdan, asked the council to hold an emergency meeting in a letter Saturday to the council president.
“Iran’s attack is a serious threat to global peace and security and I hope the Council uses all means to take concrete action against Iran,” Erdan wrote in his post on X, reported by Al Arabiya.
Iran launched a swarm of explosive drones and missiles at Israel on Saturday evening, its first direct attack on Israeli territory. Iran risks major escalation as the United States pledges strong support to Israel.
Meanwhile, according to the Times of Israel, a spokesman for Malta, which holds the rotating presidency this month, said the Security Council is targeting the meeting to be held at 16.00 local time.
Iran’s attack came as Tehran’s proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen launched a series of attacks on Israeli and Western targets since October 7, when Iran-backed Hamas launched a devastating terror attack in southern Israel, sparking the ongoing war in Israel. Gaza.
Israel’s UN envoy, in a letter to the Security Council president, called Iran’s airstrikes a “flagrant violation of Israel’s sovereignty.”
“Today, Iran has launched more than 200 direct attacks from within its territory [drone]cruise missiles and ballistic missiles against Israel,” wrote Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan.
“This attack represents a severe and dangerous escalation.”
