The United Nations (UN) Office for Human Rights in Colombia reported this Monday that in the first quarter of this year it received 43 reports of murders of social leaders in the country, almost the same as in the entire first half of 2023.
“From January 1 to March 31, 2024, the UN Office for Human Rights learned of 43 allegations of homicides of defenders. Of these there is 1 verified case, 39 cases are in the process of verification and 3 cases are not conclusive,” the organization detailed in a report.
This is a notable increase in homicides, since in just three months almost the same cases have been recorded as in the first six months of 2023, when this UN office verified 46 murders of human rights defenders.
The only case that he was able to verify was the one that occurred in the town of Tame, which is part of the department of Arauca, bordering Venezuela, considering that the homicide is linked to his work to defend Human Rights.
