Ukrainian Foreign Minister will visit India – 2024-03-22 08:44:34

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will visit India next week. He will make the visit in hopes of gaining support for the peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. He will be the top Ukrainian official to visit Delhi since the war broke out two years ago. British news agency Reuters reported this news about two Indian officials.

Delhi, which has close economic and defense ties with Russia, has refrained from condemning Moscow for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. During this period, the country increased its oil purchases from Russia.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his election win on Wednesday. A statement from the Kremlin said that in addition to congratulations, the two leaders also discussed Ukraine.

One of the two officials, who did not wish to be named, said Kuleba will visit Delhi at the invitation of Indian Foreign Minister Subramaniam Jaishankar. The invitation followed a phone conversation between Modi and Zelensky earlier this year.

India’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

A second Indian official said a formal announcement of the visit could be made next week. Indian media published reports on this on Tuesday.

Earlier, the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian President’s Office, Andriy Yarmak, had a phone conversation with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on March 15.

Modi has held multiple phone conversations with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia. He met with Zelensky on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan in May last year.
