UK to release thousands to ease prison congestion

One of the first measures of the new Labour government

The new British Labour government has announced the early release of thousands of prisoners to ease prison congestion, which are 99% full, excluding those prosecuted for sexual offences from this benefit.

Detainees who are eligible for early release, under police control, after having served half of their sentence.

Barely a week after taking power, Labour was forced to act in response to the dire situation in prisons, which risked not having any vacancies in the coming weeks.

Since the beginning of 2023, British prisons have been 99% full. As of 8 July, only around 700 places were available for prisoners. menout of a total of 84,000.

“Our prisons are on the verge of collapse”said the new Minister of Justice, Shabana Mahmood, when announcing the emergency action plan that includes this measure.
