UDI deputy embraces “Lagos Weber formula” to unblock pension system reform

Regarding the debate over the reform of the pension system and the incipient threat of a new withdrawal of funds, the UDI deputy Juan Manuel Fuenzalida He referred to the 4-2 or 5-1 formulas regarding additional contributions, proposed by the Senator Ricardo Lagos Weber (PPD) and that is increasingly generating more followers in the face of an agreement between the ruling party and the opposition.

“When President Sebastián Piñera’s pension reform was proposed, it was agreed 3-3, and we approved it 3-3. At that time the PGU did not exist. The PGU starts in 2021, which we did with the tax reform and that the PGU began to be paid with a budget, and therefore, what we say is that solidarity is precisely in the PGU, and that is financed with general expenses of the nation, that is, with the nation’s budget,” he said in conversation with Al Pan Pan con Mirna Schindler.

He later added that “this assumption of solidarity, as some say, because in the end it is a distribution system, in our opinion is covered by the PGU. That is, if you ask me, rather than starting to talk about 5-1, 4-2, I think that figures are not the issue. The issue of solidarity starts with improving what is, for example, the PGU.”

“Regarding Senator Lagos Weber’s 5-1 proposal, I believe it is possible. Everything can be reviewed. I believe that today, agreements should be the logic that we should have going forward, but also where we do not continue to be subject to the fact that the agreement is made to the extent that I like and is in accordance with the transformations that I want to make. , he added.

“So I think that Senator Lagos Weber is being the hinge there, to be able to unblock an important issue. I believe that the 5-1 could be perfectly reviewable, to the extent that that 1% actually reaches the people who really need it, because this is what, today the issue of solidarity in particular is resolved by what the PGU is. , which was one of the good measures adopted by President Piñera’s government. A little late, but good,” he concluded.

Time for agreements

Along the same lines, the parliamentarian subscribed to the message delivered by the economist and director of Espacio Público, Eduardo Engel, that the current scenario is the best for the right to negotiate and reach agreements with the Government.

“Today we have a very good position on the matter, and therefore I believe that we must take advantage of these positions to reach good agreements, especially if we want to be a government in two more years. Have consistent results,” he said.

“The issue of pensions is an issue that it is up to us parliamentarians to look at now and not continue to delay this issue. But, I insist, only if it is the government’s gun on the table and seeing that the proposals that are made are also close to the proposals that we make. So, the problem is that today, the government is like it does its tricks on whims, it only talks about the number, but ultimately its pension reform is a project to transform the pension system with which we are not okay”, he closed.
