Tyson Fury reportedly fired his father, John Fury, from the ranks of his boxing coaches and instructors. John was accused of being the culprit behind the embarrassing defeat Tyson Fury against Oleksandr Usyk.
In the fight which took place at Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 18 May 2024, Tyson Fury suffered a humiliating defeat to his opponent Oleksandr Usyk . It was the first defeat suffered by the Gypsy King in his career as a boxer.
During the fight, Tyson Fury entrusted three people to work in the corner of the ring giving instructions. They are John Fury the father, as well as SugarHill Steward and Andy Lee.
In his post-fight interview, Tyson Fury blamed his defeat on a mistake in instructions from the corner of the ring. It was later revealed that John Fury made different orders from the other two instructors which made Tyson Fury confused.
“If I were asked to attack, I would definitely attack,” said Tyson Fury in the post-duel press conference.
Boxing commentator Carl Froch agrees with that. According to him, during the duel, John Fury instructed different movements compared to the other two people so that Tyson Fury hesitated.
“The ring corner work was total chaos because John Fury was screaming over SugarHill’s voice, he was screaming over everyone else’s voice. So you were getting conflicting advice,” said Carl Froch.
As an illustration, John Fury did not have the best boxing career among Tyson Fury’s instructors. His record as a boxer is 8-4-1 where he lost by knockout in his last two professional fights, with the last fight coming in 1995. Meanwhile, Andy Lee is a former world champion, and Steward is the son of legendary trainer Emanuel Steward.
