HANOI Typhoon Yagi that crashes Vietnam has triggered landslides and flash floods. The death toll as of Thursday had risen to 226 people and more than 100 others were missing.

The spike in the death toll was announced by Vietnam’s government disaster agency, which said flash floods were beginning to ease in the capital, Hanoi.

The Southeast Asian nation has been reeling from the impact of Typhoon Yagi—the strongest storm to hit Asia this year—which has been battering Vietnam’s northeastern coast since Saturday.

According to Vietnam’s disaster agency, in addition to more than 100 people still missing, about 800 others were injured.

Several districts of Hanoi were still flooded on Thursday, but the weather agency said in the afternoon that the flood pressure had eased.

However, flash floods and landslides continue to hit various areas in northern Vietnam.

The areas had previously evacuated thousands of people living near the swollen Red River as water levels rose to their highest in 20 years.

“There’s a lot of sadness in this town and there’s a lot of worry going into the night,” said Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation co-CEO Skye Maconachie.

“Many people who had almost nothing have lost everything,” he was quoted as saying. Reuters, Friday (13/9/2024).
