Two people died on Thursday following an avalanche in the Mont Blanc massif, while a third fell to his death in the Ecrins massif in Isère, authorities said.
An avalanche broke out in the early afternoon in an off-piste area near the Saint-Gervais-les-Bains ski area, in the Mont Blanc massif, they learned from the Haute-Savoie prefecture.
A flow that started from an altitude of around 2,300 meters descended 400 metres, involving eight people, according to the chief of staff of the prefect of Haute-Savoie, Animya N’Tchandy. The toll is “two deceased victims, one slightly injured and five other uninjured people”. An investigation has been opened, he added.
In Isère, a 31-year-old young man, who went out “with a friend to go and see the chamois”, fell 500 meters from a rocky ridge in the municipality of Chantepérier, in the Ecrins massif, indicated the PGHM (gendarmerie platoon high mountain) from Grenoble. The other hiker, aged 26, was evacuated and remained unharmed.
