Two new deputy governors of the central bank joined – 2024-03-03 02:46:19

Joined as Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank. Khurshid Alam and Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman. They have been appointed on contractual basis for the next three years. They joined on Thursday (February 29).

Earlier on Wednesday (February 28), the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance issued two separate notifications to the Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank. Khurshid Alam and chief economist Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman was appointed as Deputy Governor and issued a notification.

In the notification, it is said about these two, they have been appointed contractually for a period of 3 years from the date of joining the post of Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank on the condition of voluntary retirement from the current post and suspension of post-retirement leave. AKM Sajedur Rahman Khan on February 2 of this month and Abu Farah on February 23. Nasser’s contract expired as Deputy Governor. Two new deputy governors have been appointed on contractual basis in these two vacant posts.

Khurshid Alam

Khurshid Alam obtained his Master’s degree in Commerce from Dhaka University and later his MBA degree. He joined Bangladesh Bank in 1988 as Assistant Director. Khurshid Alam Bank Banking Regulations and Policy Department, Bank Inspection Department, Financial Institutions and Markets Department, Agricultural Credit Department, Payment Systems Department, Department of Currency Management, Department of Off-Site Supervision, SME and Special Programs Department, Secretary Department and other important responsibilities observed

He has traveled to various countries including India, USA, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Netherlands for official work. Father of one daughter and one son, Khurshid Alam was born in a Muslim family in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Dr. Habibur Rahman

Dr. Habibur Rahman was born in a Muslim family in Khiratala village of Vijaynagar upazila in Brahmanbaria. He got first division from Mirasani Polytechnic Academy and Brahmanbaria Government College and passed SSC and HSC respectively. Graduated from Jahangirnagar University (JABI) with First Class Bachelors (Honours) and Masters Degrees in Economics.

In 1990, Dr. joined the research department of Bangladesh Bank as an assistant director. Habibur Rahman. Before joining Bangladesh Bank, he did higher training at Bangladesh Development Research Institute. Later, he obtained Master’s and Ph.D degrees in applied economics from Eastern and Western Michigan University in the United States under the scholarship of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Habibur Rahman worked in Research Department, Monetary Management and Technical Unit (now Monetary Policy Department) of Bangladesh Bank. Later, he was employed as a Senior Research Economist in the Policy Analysis Unit of Bangladesh Bank under the World Bank’s Capacity Building Project. He served as Deputy General Manager at Bangladesh Bank Training Academy and lastly as General Manager at the Policy Support Wing of the Governor’s Secretariat.

He has represented Bangladesh Bank in many international conferences, seminars and workshops outside the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Asian Development Bank (ADB). As a part of foreign training, he traveled to various countries in Europe-America and Africa including Japan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, India, South Korea.
