In Weiteveen, a village in Drenthe near the border with Germany, a man was arrested for the death of two people. A police spokesperson told RTV Drenthe that one of the victims was in the car and the other in a house.
Around 8.45am the police received a report of a violent accident on the Bargerweg in which several people were injured. The officers who responded to the scene ascertained that shots were fired during the incident. The suspect, a 50-year-old man from Klazienaveen, was arrested.
Unverified images of the suspected suspect, allegedly taken near the incident, are circulating on social media. The police cannot yet say anything about these images. The police also cannot report anything about the identity and circumstances of the victims’ deaths.
The Forensic Investigation Service is investigating. The suspect is being interrogated. According to RTV Drenthe the incident appears to have been preceded by a long-standing conflict.
Mayor Eric van Oosterhout of Emmen, which includes Weiteveen, says he regrets the victims. “I understand the emotions that arise following this terrible accident,” he writes on X. His condolences go to his relatives, he adds.
