Türkiye arrests IS suspect working at nuclear power plant

The suspect is working under fake identification documents at the $20 billion Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project in the port city of Mersin, built by Rosatom Group, Russia.

On February 13, Turkish media said that the country’s anti-terrorism police arrested a suspect belonging to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

This person is working under a false identity at the $20 billion Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in the port city of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast, built by Rosatom Group, Russia.

In December last year, Türkiye licensed the operation of the first unit of the country’s first nuclear power plant.

The plant is expected to be fully operational by 2028 and supply 10% of Türkiye’s electricity output.

Last week, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that the country’s authorities had arrested 147 people suspected of having ties to IS in operations across 33 provinces and cities.

Last month, two IS fighters allegedly shot and killed a man at the Santa Maria Roman Catholic Church in Istanbul.

IS remains the second largest terrorist threat to Türkiye.

In 2013, Türkiye became one of the first countries to declare IS a terrorist organization. The country has been targeted by IS over the years, killing more than 300 people and injuring hundreds more in at least 21 bombings and armed attacks.

Türkiye has stepped up repression of terrorist organizations. Since 2011, the country has deported 9,000 foreign terrorist fighters, mainly from IS, from 102 different countries.
